Treatment is grounded in evidence-based approaches, tailored to each individual’s needs.
Dr. Colby primarily utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) with elements of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for anxiety and OCD-related conditions.
Services include:
Diagnostic evaluations and treatment planning
Individual therapy for anxiety, OCD, panic, and phobias
Parent consultation and coaching
Support for co-occurring ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Psychoeducation on emotional regulation and coping skills
Referrals for accommodations and further support or treatment
Whether sessions are held virtually or in-person, each treatment plan is individualized to help clients and their families develop meaningful skills for lasting change.
For many clinicans, its easy to sit with a child and talk about OCD or anxiety.
At Colby & Co. Psychologically Services, we conduct proper ERP which can include going into the community to engage practical skills in real life situations. Lexington and the surrounding towns have a variety of local businesses to complete exposures in. Whether we are practicing distress tolerance skills to manage loud noises in restaurants which can trigger panic, contaminating ourselves to challenge unhelpful OCD thoughts, or visiting a pet store to face musophobia (fear of mice and rats), we are ready to provide the appropriate and necessary care with in-vivo exposure.
Colby & Co. Psychological Services are trained to provide client-centered care; whether that means providing skills taught over a limited number or sessions or gaining support through a multitude of life stages.
For adults facing mental health challenges, one round of CBT or ERP to assist in resolving an emotional or behavioral concern is ~12 weeks. When working with children, that time can be extended as they benefit from repetition, additional repeated exposures, more progressive learning, and implementing new family behaviors as accommodations are unlearned and supportive actions are used in the home. Children and adolescents may also benefit from additional sessions if there are any co-occuring developmental conditions such as ADHD or ASD. Following initial treatment, many clients benefit from monthly "check-ins" to ensure they are continuing to use skills appropriately and managing distress adaptively before discharging. While every child is different, Colby & Co. Psychological Services's goal is always to provide the skills needed to move your loved one out of the therapy office and back enjoying their day to day life.
For some, therapy is about the absence of illness or stress, for others, therapy is an opportunity for wellness and self actualization. As children and adolescents develop they will continuially face advancing social and academic expectations, pressures, and responsbilities. Following inital treatment, on going supportive therapy can be a helpful support to process these changes, teach loved ones how to adapt their learned skills to meet these new higher expectations, and foster self sufficiency. Supportive therapy also offers time and space for developing minds to explore social dynamics, practice CBT, DBT, or ACT skills, and be exposed more advanced therapeutic techniques as they become appropriate. Supportive therapy can also be a great choice for loved ones who experience chronic conditions, developmental disorders, or who face systemic or environmental stressors.
